Higher Kinnerton Mersey Tunnel Tour

Yesterday for our monthly Out Of The Village Walk , 23 walkers went by train to Liverpool and enjoyed breakfast at Wetherspoons. We then took a leisurely walk around the Waterfront before our allotted time for our guided tour of the first built Mersey tunnel, namely the Queensway Tunnel.

The Queensway tunnel was officially opened by King George V on 18th July 1934, costing over £8 million to construct, and ranked as the biggest single municipal enterprise ever undertaken, and took just over 8 years to build the 2.13 miles of roadway.
